Every Astro Bot Ability

After rescuing the two Rising Heat Cameo Bots, players will be able to procure items for them from the Gatcha Lab at the Crash Site. Cayde-6 gets a Hand Cannon and Light Partner, while Wesker gets a Viral Vial. One of Astro Bot’s hidden trophies is called “The Lost Eggacy”. To unlock this trophy, you need to find all three Golden Egg “artifacts” on the Dude Raiding world of Serpent Starway. The Dude Raiding level unlocks after you defeat the final boss of Serpent Starway, Lady Venomara.

Whenever I’d wonder if my intuition was leading me to something valuable, I’d find I was right. I won’t talk about the other buildings players can build in Astro Bot’s hub world, but rest assured they are great as well, giving players extra incentive to hunt down every single collectible. The bird costs 200 coins, so players have to give up some gacha pulls to use it, but it’s a great way to keep players from getting stuck. Astro Bot Rescue Mission is a 2018 virtual reality platform game developed and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4’s PlayStation VR headset. It stars a cast of robot characters first introduced in The Playroom and The Playroom VR. In the game, the player plays as Captain Astro, who aims to rescue his lost crew scattered across different worlds.

Many themes are unique to a single stage; Sky Garden’s flamingo paradise is never revisited, nor is Construction Derby’s building site. You’ll also explore a giant singing tree, a vibrant casino, and the inside of a giant hourglass — all one-and-done ideas. It isn’t just the level’s themes that are varied; many have their own gameplay ideas as well. One later stage involves swapping from day to night, changing the geometry of the level, while an underwater planet adopts a more open design — and equips Astro with a power-up unique to that stage. While there are some recurring themes and mechanics, the overall variety meant we were constantly excited to see what was coming next.

Many of these things are platformer standards, but that’s kind of the point, because the game always chucks something in to warp it and make it fresh. Creativity can be two things you sort of understand combined in a way you didn’t expect. That was followed up with the PSVR-exclusive game Astro Bot Rescue Mission. And then everyone who buys a PS5 gets a free digital copy of Astro’s Playroom, a short game that lasts between three and five hours, depending on how many of the collectibles you want to get. The gimmicks introduced in the game are reminiscent of Super Mario Odyssey’s level design, where stages have a central gimmick that you have to work around.

While fairly uncomplicated, this narrative table-setting serves as an effective foundation for the adventure to come, as Astro visits various unique and exciting planets across several solar systems. However, Astro Bot elevates itself from its two predecessors, proving once and for all that PlayStation’s relatively new platforming series deserves to be mentioned among the greats of the genre. After acquiring the balloon power-up, backtrack to the previous platform and float to the opposite side. In the beginning of the stage, immediately knock out the ladybug and use it as a trampoline to get onto the pillar to the left, the puzzle piece will be found here. After getting the balloon power up from the huge robot, immediately use it to get to the robot’s head to find the hidden bot.

Eventually, you’ll find a platform that has a separate spiral platform to the right, a goop monster above, and a sand waterfall that’s covering a caged bot. To get in there and save the little guy, boost up, kill the blob monster, pull the lever it was sitting on, and jump down to rescue the bot. Like its predecessor, Astro Bot is filled to the brim with PlayStation references and cameos. The most visible ones come in the form of the Special Bots — bots dressed up as famous and obscure PlayStation family characters. Out of the 300 bots you can collect in the game, 173 are such Special Bots. ASTRO BOT is a platformer video game developed by Team ASOBI and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Entire levels are built around Astro Bot’s power-ups, but most aren’t just one-off gimmicks. Alongside the new content, Team Asobi has also released a PlayStation 5 Pro patch for Astro Bot, “featuring a constant best resolution while still running at 60 frames per second.” So that’s nice. Astro Bot’s Digital Deluxe edition also has several exclusive items, including 10 more PSN avatars, a digital art gallery, and a digital soundtrack. It also lets you unlock Astro’s Yharnam Tourist outfit, Golden outfit, and two more Dual Speeder paint colors early (all the outfits and paint colors are available in the base game, too).

On the flip side, this leads to a nitpick regarding the enemies. Besides the bosses, none of the enemies have names or identities. This robs the enemies of the kind of simple but memorable personalities that even the most generic Bots have. Nebulas is the main antagonist of the series, a space bully who loves causing trouble for Astro and his friends. He’s a green-skinned alien with a massive mouth, always looking for ways to make life difficult for the crew. You’ll dash, swing, and rocket-punch through diverse areas like volcanoes and jungles, unlocking 15 new abilities, including using Barkster, the Bulldog Booster, to air-dash and smash enemies.

A follow-up to the PS5 pack-in game Astro’s Playroom, it’s a colorful platformer starring an adorable robot named Astro. Unlike most of Astro’s previous outings, this is a full-sized game, with over 50 planets for you to explore. It’s available to buy in physical and digital form, plus in a digital deluxe edition. Read on to see what comes in each edition, how much it costs, and more. And in case you’re wondering if it’s any good, you can put those questions aside.

On the cute side of things, Astro reacts to his environments with endearing animations like shivering in the cold, quivering in fear and tapping his tiny metal feet in excitement, and his bot friends are similarly expressive. When Astro boops his head on an impassable ceiling, he makes the sweetest little flinching motion. The bots turn around and shake their booties at Astro right before he punches them into the DualSense. On the pause screen, you can flick all of your collected bots out of the digital controller and they flail in mid-air before landing safely back inside the touchpad. Even before picking up any cool new toys, Astro has a laser-propelled hover ability that lets him destroy enemies while jumping over them, plus a standard punch and a chargeable spin move. If you give Kratos Bot a friendly punch at your Crash Site, he’ll use his axe to freeze you into an ice cube. Well, to unlock the “Thaw, God of Thunder!” trophy in Astro Bot, you need to trick Kratos Bot into freezing Thor Bot instead. Did you know you can catch the bugs in Apes On The Loose with your net?

Naturally, the story is not the focus here, and yet I was so immersed in the 15-hour game that I beat it in two long sittings. It may be 2024’s most immersive game, and it achieves that without a line of dialogue. Instead, each level tells a story, clear as day, about where you ought to go next and what you should do there. Bots make another appearance in Astro’s Playroom, now residing with Astro Bot in the PlayStation 5. Unlike the last game, they do not need to be saved and serve as simple NPCs throughout the CPU Plaza and its worlds.

Players can also watch the video at the top of the page to see their animations and Gatcha Lab items. Simply put, this feature makes collecting all bots and other secrets in the game trivially easy. It’s a lovely idea, and we hope it finds its way into other games that could use it similarly in years to come. They also give the devs more freedom and ability to get creative – and just as importantly, lets us players take our time and enjoy every little detail. Many of us with backlogs probably don’t feel it that’s the thing.
